Legalnaut vs uploading your case file to ChatGPT

VERIFIED SEPTEMBER 2026

General assistants are genuinely good at reading documents. If you have thirty pages and a question, pasting them into ChatGPT or Claude will often get you a useful answer in a minute, and there is no reason to buy software for that.

The difficulty starts at the scale a real case file reaches, and at the point where the answer has to survive being checked.

LEGALNAUT A GENERAL AI ASSISTANT
Documents in one conversation The whole file, however large What fits in the context window
Where an answer comes from Named document and page, with its checksum, checked before you see it Usually unattributed
Scanned documents OCR before analysis Depends on the upload
Same question next month Same file, same citations Re-upload, re-explain
A contradiction it finds A suggestion until a lawyer confirms it Stated as fact
Evidence integrity sha256 recorded on arrival, content immutable Not a concept
Who else can see it Your workspace only Depends on the plan and settings you chose

When Legalnaut is the better fit

  • The file is larger than one conversation, and you will ask about it more than once.
  • An answer has to name the document it came from, because someone will ask.
  • Scans and photographs make up a real share of the file.
  • More than one person works the same case file.

When a general AI assistant is the better fit

  • You have a handful of documents and a one-off question.
  • You want drafting help rather than a searchable record.
  • The work is research about law rather than about a specific file.

Frequently asked

Can I not just use ChatGPT with a project folder?
For a small file, yes, and it works well. The limits show up at volume and at verification: a general assistant will not tell you the checksum of the document it quoted, and it has no notion of an exhibit number that has to stay fixed for the life of the proceedings.
Does Legalnaut use the same models?
It uses commercial language models for the analysis steps, chosen per task. The difference is not the model, it is what surrounds it: the file is indexed, every claim keeps a pointer to its source sentence, and answers are assembled from documents that are retrieved and named.
Is my case file used to train a model?
No. Our processing agreements with the model providers prohibit training on customer content.
